MILITARY instructors have had their efforts with young people officially recognised.

Armed Forces personnel were awarded Lord Lieutenant’s Certificates for Meritorious Services in a ceremony at Hollis VC Armoury on Ridgeway in Middlesbrough.

Army Reservist Staff Sergeant Damian Jakstins, of 37 Signal Regiment, who is from Darlington, was recognised for outstanding service, including teaching music in Durham.

The talented flautist, saxophonist and clarinetist joined the British Army in 1979 and is a member of the Royal Signals (Northern) Band and peripatetic music teacher with Durham Music Service. He is said to have developed countless young musicians over the years.

He said: “This is the pinnacle of my Army Reserve career. It means an awful lot to me to be recognised for the service I have given to the band and to other people.”

Sergeant Major Instructor Stewart Allison, from Norton, was honoured for his 17 years’ service with Cleveland Army Cadet Force, which began when he was aged 13.

Flight Lieutenant Rachel Mason, of Central and East Yorkshire Wing, Air Training Corps was also honoured. She is currently Officer Commanding of 405 (Darlington) Squadron and lives in the town.

The awards were presented by Barry Dodd, the Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, who said: “These recipients have given up so much of their time and I find it amazingly impressive.”
