THOUSANDS flocked to Darlington to spread the festive cheer for a Christmas lights switch on tonight.

Sparks flew in Darlington as the market square was lit up with twinkling lights and fireworks for the event, which marks a weekend of festivities.

The occasion was attended by the X Factor's Katie Coleman and Darlington pantomime and Coach Trip star Brendon Sheerin.

Hosted by TFM’s Steve and Karen, the fun kicked off with a special appearance from Santa and entertainment including music, dance, games and competitions and was finished off with a spectacular firework finale.

Visitors to the town got into the festive mood earlier in the day with carol singing at Queen Street Shopping Centre, followed by more singing at the Sing to Win competition at the Cornmill Shopping Centre.

The lights switch on coincided with the start of late night shopping in Darlington, giving shoppers even more time to take advantage of the shops and restaurants in the town.

Visitors also had a merry time perusing the festive goodies as the annual Christmas Market set up stall in the town centre.

The weekend promises to have a fun finale in the form of the ever-popular Cornmill Reindeer Parade on Sunday, November 29, from 11am.

The Christmas Market will be open from 9am to 5pm on Friday, November 27 and Saturday, November 28.
