IMPROVEMENT works to upgrade the Dolphin Centre are continuing in earnest.

It took three days to drain the 134,000 gallons of water from the main pool and the main phase of work has now begun with the replacement of the boilers and pumps in the plant rooms that allow the centre and pool complex to function.

Scaffolding has been erected poolside to allow contractors access to the ceiling to carry out mechanical and electrical works, including new lighting and improvements to the ventilation system.

There will also be new drainage and tiled flooring in the family changing village.

The work will be completed late December and the main swimming pool area will remain closed for its duration.

The main swimming pool will re-open in January, when the training pool will then close until late March.

Mike Crawshaw, head of leisure at Darlington Borough Council, said: “This work is essential to allow the Dolphin Centre to function, to ensure its continued success and to help make it a more inviting place for visitors.

“We know it will mean some disruption to our normal programme of activities, but we hope customers will support us while the work is ongoing.

“Come the New Year, we will have a better, brighter pool for all to enjoy.

“In the meantime, the centre still boasts a packed programme of activities for all ages to enjoy, including a special Saturday fun pass, as well as a new healthy menu coming soon.”
