HORSES on the line caused hold-ups for train travellers in the region on Saturday afternoon.
The incident affected CrossCountry, First TransPennine Express and Virgin Trains East Coast services.
"Animals on the line between Durham and Darlington are causing delays of up to 20 minutes between these stations," a National Rail statement read.
"There is no firm estimate yet of how long disruption will last but it is likely to continue until at least 2.30pm."
Travellers were advised to follow the incident using the hashtag #Durham
