A TEAM of enterprising teens have helped convert a temporary bridal boutique into a haven for bookworms.

The group of 16-year-olds are working on the National Citizenship Scheme (NCS) and decided to put their efforts into creating a new bookstore above the Oxfam shop in Skinnergate, Darlington.

The room had been converted into a bridal boutique in May which opened throughout the summer, but it needed a new look in order to become a bookstore.

It took the 14-strong NCS group two-weeks to redecorate the room, complete with mannequins dressed as book characters and well-known quotes from literary greats adorning the walls.

Team member Julia Dudycz, who also volunteers at Oxfam, was delighted with the room’s transformation.

She said: “It was hard work because we had to do everything ourselves, but it was also rewarding.

“When I go up there when I’m on my shifts it is a proud feeling to see it.”

Volunteers are currently in the process of stocking all the shelves, but once the bookstore is up and running it will have the same opening hours as the main store.
