BOOKWORMS can have a behind the scenes look at a Darlington library as part of its 130th anniversary celebrations.

As Darlington’s Crown Street Library gears up to celebrate 130 years of service to the town in October, visitors are being offered the chance to go behind the scenes on a special tour.

Visitors will be able to see where the books are processed, where the older books are stored and where the old children’s library used to be.

The tours will also include a visit to the library’s basement, home to historical local treasures, including maps, photographs and paintings.

The tours of the Grade II listed building, which opened on October 23, 1885, have been organised as part of this year’s national Heritage Open Days programme.

They will take place on Thursday, September 10 at 2pm, Friday, September 11 at 10am and Saturday, September 12 at 10am.

The tours are free and will last around 90 minutes.

Places are limited so visitors are being urged to book in advance by calling into the Centre for Local Studies, in Crown Street Library.
