CAMPAIGNERS will take to the streets this week to oppose further austerity measures.
Protests across the country will take place on Wednesday, July 8 as Chancellor George Osbourne announces his ‘emergency austerity’ budget, expected to include up to £12 billion in welfare cuts.
Members of Darlington TUC and Darlington Against Cuts will campaign on High Row between noon and 1.30pm.
Pat Buttle, secretary of Darlington Trades Council, said: “I find the language of this government is hypocritical.
“It claims to support working people, when at the same time it plans to cut in work benefits by up to £2,000 pa.
“The leaked proposal to penalise council tenant with a family income of over £30,000 by increasing their rents is particularly pernicious.
“In contrast the government plans to reward the wealthy by increasing the inheritance exemption to £1miilion.
“People need to stand up and fight back.”
Protests will also take place in Stockton’s Central Garden from noon until 1pm and at the Spectra-txt sculpture in Middlesbrough town centre from 5pm until 6pm.
