CHURCHES in Darlington past and present are the focus of a new book to be launched at two special events in the town this week.

Local historian Colin Wilkinson will be available to talk about what inspired him and sign copies of his book ‘A History of Darlington Churches’ at two separate events at the Centre for Local Studies at Darlington Library on Tuesday (7 July) and Thursday (9 July).

Mr Wilkinson, who completed a Master’s Degree in Local History in 2008, explained the inspiration behind his book.

He said: “A chance comment at home about my family history provided the germ of an idea for the book.

“I was reminded that my parents were married at the Methodist church in Corporation Road, Darlington.

“I was aware that many churches had been closed over the last 40 or 50 years and I wondered if that church was still there.

“I have not lived in Darlington for some years and whilst I visit the town often from my home on Teesside, I had not walked along Corporation Road for at least 40 years.

“However, when I did, about a year ago, I couldn’t find the church.

“From this, my research into the development and, in some cases, the fate of churches in Darlington started.”

Mr Wilkinson is looking forward to talking to local people about his book and visitors will also be able to view some framed pictures of local churches from the library’s collection.

All are welcome to attend the free events, which both run from 10am until 1pm.

Copies of ‘A History of Darlington Churches’ will also be on sale, price £5.
