PUPILS have been rewarded for their efforts in choosing active ways of travelling to school.
Students from St George’s Church of England Academy, Middleton St George, were one of many schools competing in the MEGA Friday walks which encouraged pupils and parents to leave their cars behind every Friday.
Thanks to their efforts in finding more active routes, pupils, teachers and parents of the academy were rewarded with an additional walk, with a ‘Heroes and Villains’ theme to recognise their hard work.
Two groups set out from opposite ends of Middleton St George village today (Friday July 3), where they met back at the school to enjoy a themed assembly by historical theatre company ‘Histrionics’.
Cllr Nick Wallis, Darlington Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “Children in Darlington are incredibly good at choosing active modes of travel for their journey to school.
”Thanks to Team Local Motion and the teachers in school, Darlington pupils are very aware of the benefits of walking, cycling and scooting to school and take every opportunity to get out into the fresh air before their school day starts.
“Well done to the pupils of St George’s and to all the children and parents in Darlington who choose to get active on their journey to school.”
