A FUNDRAISING golf event to support wounded veterans and military personnel is predicted to have raised more than £6,000.

The charity golf event for Help for Heroes was hosted by Rockliffe Hall, near Darlington, today (July 1) and the competition included two teams of veterans from Phoenix House recovery centre in Catterick Garrison.

Michaela Slay, events co-ordinator at Phoenix House, said the centre users had a fantastic day despite a thunder storm hitting in the afternoon.

She said: “It was a brilliant day and our teams have really enjoyed it.

“The competition included beat the pro, hole in one to win a Sherwoods car, as well as the team of four competition.

“After the success of another golf event at Rockliffe Hall last year we wanted to hold our own fundraising day – the veterans and service personnel at Phoenix House have really got into the sport and we have had a lot of support.

“We think we have raised around £6,000 from donations, two raffles, sponsorship and team sales.”

Mo Usman, manager of Phoenix House, in Catterick Garrison, said it was the first Help for Heroes-led golf tournament to be held in the north of England.

“We are therefore determined that it will be a huge success and are sure that, with Rockliffe Hall as the event venue, it will be just that,” he said.

The Rockliffe Hall team have been supporters of the charity since making Phoenix House its charity partner for last summer’s European Senior Tour, English Senior Open.

As part of the sporting event Rockliffe Hall invited a team of wounded, injured and sick veterans to take part in the Pro Am prior to the main tournament.
