SCHOOL children learnt the science of catching criminals during a week of special events aimed at raising their aspirations.

Officers from Durham Constabulary’s dog section visited Heathfield Primary School in Darlington to demonstrate the skills needed to catch crooks with the help of their four-legged friends.

The event was part of the school’s Science Week which is focussing on careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

A host of Darlington-based engineering and architecture companies are also supporting the week, along with Morrisons supermarket which has provided some of the equipment needed for the pupils to try out their new-found skills.

Some of the activities taking place throughout the week will include bridge construction, ice-cream making and problem-solving using forensic skills.

A school spokesman said: “At Heathfield we believe it is so important for our pupils to realise the impact of science in their everyday lives.

“We want to engage, inspire and ensure our pupils reach their full potential.”
