RECORDS tumbled on the track and in the field as students battled for honours at an academy’s annual sports day.
Jamie Stapleton and Kyle Nimmo, from Darlington School of Mathematics and Science, made record-breaking look easy with the former knocking an incredible 11 seconds off the standing 1,500m time and the latter hurling his javelin 21.34m.
Medal winner Emily Singlewood smashed an eight-year record by throwing the discus 12.96m. She said: “I only started throwing discus this year but if I am breaking records I think I had better continue.”
In the year nine 800m race Beth Graham sliced 13 seconds off the previous quickest time with 2 min 57secs and Megan Mairs set the standard in the year ten high jump with 1.35m.
Year eight student Lameeya Noor was joint winner of the high jump with Olivia Bray, both recording 1.3m while also taking the honours in the 200m.
Other records to fall came courtesy of Charis Bell in the year ten 800m and Natasha Hall in the year eight 800m.
PE teacher Karen Phillips said: “All the students should feel extremely proud of their performances after doing their very best for themselves and their houses.
“It was great to see so many records tumble, particularly as many were beaten emphatically.”
