FAMILIES in Darlington enjoyed a day out in the park with a difference as they mingled with superheroes and fairytale characters.

The Mascot Adventure Trail, in South Park, was just one event in a wider scheme to encourage more people to make the most of the parkland and open spaces in their communities.

Each child had a choice of a tiara, sword or helmet to decorate with the help of some of their favourite characters, including Snow White, Spiderman, Peter Pan, Cinderella and Belle.

As they met their mascots along the way they decorated their chosen item.

More than 100 children took part and Lisa Locke, programme coordinator at Groundwork North East and Cumbria which supported the event, said: “What a fantastic day!

“Families have had an amazing time exploring the South Park, finding their favourite characters in the sunshine.

“The park has been so busy.”

Further walks are planned in parks across Darlington in the coming months with themes including wildlife and nature, and some that will incorporate litter picks.
