A DARLINGTON student is gaining valuable work experience thanks to a housing company's policy of involving apprentices in the redevelopment of properties which have been empty for more than six months.

David Streits, who is studying at Darlington College, is undertaking a work placement at Regent House in Darlington, Coast and Country’s Empty Homes project.

The scheme identifies empty properties, and trainees and apprentices help turn them into suitable homes.

Regent House, a former office block, is being converted into 47 one-bedroom flats.

Mr Streits is on a Next Steps programme at Darlington College. Next Steps is a supported learning environment for young people working towards qualifications and employment.

He has an interest in the construction trades and his placement has provided an opportunity for him to try different trades, working alongside joiners, painting and decorators, plumbers and electricians.

Lesley Conroy, head of tenant services at Coast and Country, said: “David has done very well in his work placements, acquiring valuable experience and skills and gaining in confidence.

“We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work with Darlington College and support the Next Steps programme.

"Empty Homes is not just about providing high-quality homes but also offering opportunities to local people to enhance their skills and gain valuable experience in the workplace.”

Mr Streits said: “I have had a great time working at Regent House and it’s definitely helped me to think about my future and what I would like to do after college.”
