A RETIRED member of the Probation Service was welcomed as the latest member of Darlington Rotary Club at its latest meeting.

Senior vice-president David Heaton had the pleasure of inducting Kevin Robinson, whose membership was proposed and supported by Rotarian Nigel Little.

Meanwhile, the Ron Hall Golf trophy was presented to the club in 1994 and has been played for every year since. The first winner was Stan Thickett and this year it was Mr Heaton, who beat Roger James by one shot.

Mr Hall presented the cup to Mr Heaton.

The speakers at the meeting were Lana Briton and David Watson from the Youth World Foundation.

Ms Briton was born in the Ukraine, studied for her doctorate in Russia before coming to the UK and becoming a Russian and history teacher at Hummersknott Academy.

Mr Watson retired as deputy headteacher of Hummersknott in 2000 but continued on a consultancy basis, setting up partnerships between the school and others in foreign countries.

They formed Youth World Foundation in 2010 for the purpose of engaging young people from the North-East with those in other countries.

Steve Rose thanked the speakers, complimenting them on their work and Mr Heaton presented them with a cheque for £250.
