A DOG charity says it is bracing itself for an influx of ‘wolf look alike’ breeds following the start of the new television series of Games of Thrones.

Dogs Trust Darlington issued the warning after series five of the popular show got underway.

In 2014, Dogs Trust took in 175 Huskies and 35 Malamutes across its 20 Rehoming Centres in the UK, meaning that the number of wolf look alike breeds cared for by the charity has more than tripled in the past four years.

The charity believes Game of Thrones has significantly increased the popularity of large ‘wolf lookalike’ dogs, including Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies.

A significant number are ending up in rescue centres and Dogs Trust Darlington is currently caring for ten wolf look alike breeds, including Indy and Sky who are looking for a home together.

Sue Embleton, Dogs Trust Darlington’s Rehoming Centre Manager said: “We are caring for more of these dogs than usual, so I urge anyone considering a dog to make a decision based on the suitability of your lifestyle - don’t rush into a breed based on looks alone.

"Huskies are beautiful creatures, but they need owners who understand the breed and are in a position to offer a lifetime commitment.

"They are powerful, large dogs that need regular exercise, socialisation and sadly, many of these dogs are abandoned when they become too much for their owners.”

Ms Embleton added: “Huskies are bred to run around 70 miles day in cold climates. In Game of Thrones, many of the fictitious direwolves are seen covering miles and miles on their adventures across Westeros – a life far more fitting to a wolf type breed than a smaller flat without access to a garden.

"We are concerned that this increase in abandonment will continue at such a shocking rate, fuelled in part by the latest series, as people continue to buy these dogs without due consideration.”
