DOZENS of pre-war and vintage cars lined up at a North-East racing circuit as they took part in a three-day time trial.

Competitors taking part in the Flying Scotsman Rally roared into Croft Circuit, near Darlington, on the first leg of their three-day challenge today (Friday, April 17).

Organised by the Endurance Rally Association, the event is the only long distance rally to be aimed solely at vintage car enthusiasts, and features several timed stages and off-road time trials.

More than 110 cars from across the world are taking part, including FIAT Topolino and a Bentley 6.5 litre, as well as a 1917 La France American Speedster through and 1948 MG TC.

The 750-mile rally started at Oulton Hall, in Leeds, early this morning before heading across the North Yorkshire Moors to Goathland and Whitby, before making its way to Stokesley and Croft, near Darlington.

The competitors then drove towards Consett before finishing in Newcastle.

Tomorrow, the cars will travel between Newcastle and Edinburgh, before making their way from Edinburgh to Gleneagles on Sunday.

Awards will be presented at a gala dinner on the Sunday evening, and bonus points will be awarded to participants who dress in a style correct for the period of their cars.
