MAYORS from across the region enjoyed a 'steam and cream' event to showcase the best of a North-East town.

Dozens of mayors from North Yorkshire to Northumberland paid a visit to the Head of Steam museum, in Darlington, to learn more about the town’s rich railway history before enjoying a buffet lunch and ice cream at Archer’s Jersey Ice Cream Parlour, in Walworth.

Mayor of Darlington, Councillor Gerald Lee, organised the event to showcase what Darlington has to offer.

“It went absolutely brilliantly. We were showing mayors from Ripon through to Northumberland what we have here in Darlington, and promoting the museum and ice cream parlour,” he said.

“At the Head of Steam, a guide explained the history of the railways in Darlington and we enjoyed a fascinating exhibition.

“We all went in convoy to the ice cream parlour – it must have looked very strange to see this great long line of black cars.

“Susan Archer then laid on a beautiful buffet and we all ended the visit with one of their delicious ice creams.”

He added: “The mayors were delighted – it was something different.

“Part of being a mayor is showing off Darlington - the mayors will take this visit back to their own towns and cities and may get more people visiting Darlington.”
