A TALENTED dog is helping a disabled Darlington schoolboy achieve against the odds.

Cocker spaniel Vito is proving dogs are a boy’s best friend by helping his owner, 12-year-old Thomas Dixon, to overcome problems associated with cerebral palsy.

Thomas’ beloved companion meets him from school and bounds into action by carrying his bag home before helping him to take off his coat and shoes and bringing him the remote control.

Charity Dogs for the Disabled introduced Thomas to his furry friend when he was just seven and the pair went on to develop an unbreakable bond.

Carmel College student Thomas was an only child who felt lonely and isolated before meeting Vito.

He said: “When we got the phone call telling me about Vito, I couldn't believe how lucky I was and meeting Vito for the first time was the best day of my life.

“He’ll always be there for me. He’s like my special brother. I love Vito. He protects me if I fun fight with my dad and he gives me lots of nice cuddles. He is one in a million."

As well as being there to assist with the practicalities of daily life, Vito has helped Thomas battle several painful operations, rushing to his side to soothe him whenever he senses distress.

Thomas’ dad, Mike Dixon, said: “We’re very lucky to have him and he’s made a big difference.

“Vito has galvanised our family and for Thomas, he’s a companion and gives him something to focus on outside of his disability.

“With him, Thomas is just a normal child with a dog – rather than people looking at him in his wheelchair or walking poorly, their interest is focused on the dog and that leads to more conversation, helping him make friends.”

In recognition of his achievements, Thomas has been nominated to receive a Vibe award, handed out to those young people who make a difference in their communities.

Together with Vito, he will attend a ceremony at Darlington’s Civic Theatre tomorrow (Tuesday, March 24) – just weeks after the latest in a series of painful operations.

Mr Dixon said: “We are always proud of Thomas – he’s onto his third set of ops and takes it all in his stride, he doesn’t let anything get in his way.”

Thomas’ form tutor, Luke Hope, nominated him for the award, saying: “Thomas never fails to wear a beaming smile across his face, whatever adversity comes his way.”
