GEOLOGIST Professor Iain Stewart, best known as a presenter of science programmes on the BBC, is to host a lecture in Darlington.

Mr Stewart's talk, Planet Oil - A Modern Addiction, will look back at the social and political consequences of society’s gradual addiction to fossil fuels and consider whether we can ever end our dependence.

Mr Stewart is Professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth and has presented documentaries on volcanoes, earthquakes, fracking and sinkholes.

He said: "One sixth of the modern global economy depends on hydrocarbon fuels. Without them the planet would grind to a halt.

"No single resource has ever changed so overwhelmingly the course of mankind’s and earth’s history."

The Royal Geographical Society (with the IBG) lecture by Professor Iain Stewart will take place at Central Hall, in the Dolphin Centre, Darlington on Monday, March 16. Tickets are £12.
