A VOLUNTEER-run children’s reading scheme is hosting a networking event this month to recruit more members and share ideas.

Busy Readers was launched by Darlington Cares in September 2013 and involves volunteers going into schools for an hour a week to listen to children read.

Eight schools across the borough are currently signed up to the scheme and a networking event taking place at Teesside University Darlington Campus on Tuesday (March 10) will give existing members a chance to share experiences, and interested parties the chance to learn more.

It will also celebrate the success of the scheme which has seen 80 volunteers sign up so far.

Rita Wilkinson, a volunteer at Corporation Road School, said: “The nicest part about being a Busy Readers volunteer is without doubt the children themselves.

“I have found the experience to be most rewarding, and I would encourage anyone with an hour to spare to enrol on Busy Readers.

“I can assure you, our time is really appreciated within the schools by both staff and pupils.”

Darlington Cares works with Reid Street Primary School to deliver a short training course for volunteers, who undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check at the same time

The networking event runs from 4pm to 5.30pm and refreshments will be provided.
