A ROYAL Navy recruit from Darlington has set sail on a new career and completed the first phase of his training at HMS Raleigh.
Trainee Seaman Specialist Aaron Clarkson, 23, arrived at the Royal Navy’s training establishment, in Cornwall, last November.
He has since completed a 10-week intensive training course to turn him from a civilian into a sailor, ending with a passing-out-parade when the successful recruits march in front of family and friends.
The former Carmel College pupil previously worked as a refuse and recycling collector and said: “I joined the Royal Navy for a different career and to travel the world. I wanted a job with more variety.
"I think my training went really well and I’ve achieved more than I ever expected.”
Trainee Seaman Clarkson is now ready to undergo 10 months further training to qualify as a Seaman Specialist.
Through a series of courses at HMS Raleigh and HMS Collingwood, he will develop the skills and techniques required to re-supply, anchor and berth Royal Navy ships. He will also learn to operate the close communications systems and short-range weapons.
The Royal Navy's Initial Naval Training course involves recruits being taught the basics of naval discipline and customs, including navigation, combat skills, field survival and military fitness.
