PUPILS from secondary schools across Darlington competed to be crowned ‘Watt Bike Champions’ for 2015.

The competition took place at Hurworth School but it was a team from Longfield Academy that emerged victorious.

They were followed by Carmel College in second place and Hurworth in third.

All three teams will now go forward to compete in the area finals on March 25.

Kevin Kilcullen, Local Motion’s cycling officer said: “It was an especially great night as three records were broken in Year 7 boys, Year 11 Girls and Year 11 boys.

“I want to thank everybody for supporting the event and helping to make the atmosphere on the night.

“I would also like to thank our hosts, Hurworth School, for use of the facilities which helped make the racing.

“A final thank you goes to the rest of the Local Motion team who have helped me run the competition on the night.”

The Watt bike was developed in association with British Cycling and used by world and Olympic champions.

It is designed to replicate the sensation of real cycling and uses the latest in digital technology to monitor speed, cadence and distance to track the cyclists’ progress as they race.
