A GROUP of Prince’s Trust students have been getting their hands dirty to improve the grounds of a Sure Start children’s centre.

The eight-strong group of 17 to 25-year-olds from County Durham have spent the last ten days working in the garden at the Haughton Sure Start children’s centre in Darlington.

Their accomplishments include installing new fencing, creating a tyre wall and a new flowerbed and painting bright, welcoming murals around the grounds.

Ryan Towns, 19, from Darlington, described the work as “hard graft” but said he was pleased with the end result.

He said: “I’m really surprised with how much we’ve managed to do.

“When we first came in it just looked like we couldn’t do anything with it really, but I suppose that’s the same with any big job before you get started.

“It’s been hard work, but fun.”

The project follows on from a Zombie walk the group carried out in Darlington town centre which raised £150 for their cause.

Initially they wanted to spruce up the children’s ward at Darlington Memorial Hospital, but a response was not received in time so they re-directed their efforts towards helping the children’s centre.
