A TOWN’S sporting heroes are to be recognised and rewarded for their efforts as a grassroots celebration approaches its 40th year.

The 39th Darlington Sports Winners Scheme will celebrate achievement and the progress of the borough’s young athletes and recognise the men and women who help them fulfil their dreams.

In the biggest awards spectacular so far, 15 trophies will be presented at a glittering extravaganza to be staged at Darlington College.

More nominations than ever before have poured in this year for judges’ deliberations in an awards ceremony now divided into categories covering primary, secondary and further education age groups.

Awards will go to individuals and teams and those who overcome disability to take part in sport. Winners will include athletes and coaches who have made a difference to their chosen discipline.

Sports include table tennis, swimming, hockey, football, golf, martial arts, squash, tennis diving, athletics, gymnastics, badminton, cricket, boxing, netball, rugby and cycling.

The event will be attended by Darlington’s Mayor Gerald Lee and one major accolade will be presented in memory of a previous mayor and borough councillor Ron Lewis.

An audience of civic dignitaries, friends and family will be treated to a two hour spectacular, at Darlington College on January 28, outlining the courage, determination and success shown by young people and their mentors.

Organising committee member Brian Dobinson said: “The fact this awards ceremony has existed for almost 40 years is testament to the determination and commitment of the people who work tirelessly promoting sport across the borough.

“We have received a record number of nominations this year, which is brilliant, and we have thoroughly enjoyed the judging.”

The event is sponsored by a range of local organisations, including Vauxhall dealership Sherwoods, Darlington College, Darlington Borough Council, Rotary, Masterskills Football Academy, MTE and Tees Valley Sport.
