THE resident ghost of a North-East theatre has made an appearance ahead of the stage production of The Woman in Black.

Signor Rino Pepi, who founded Darlington Civic Theatre in 1907, is said to haunt the historic building, with his favourite dress circle box said to be the place he is seen most often.

A ghost of a slightly more unnerving kind will take to the stage from tonight (Monday, January 19) in a touring production of The Woman in Black, adapted from a novel by Susan Hill.

The play tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’. He engages a young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul.

The production was first performed in 1987 and has celebrated its 25th anniversary on the West End.

A major film starring Daniel Radcliffe was released in 2012, becoming the highest grossing British horror film in 20 years.

The play will begin at 7.30pm each night until Saturday, with matinees at 2pm on Thursday and 2.30pm on Saturday.

Tickets priced between £17 and £25 are available from the Civic Theatre box office on 01325-486555.
