A CHRISTMAS classic has been given a modern twist by primary school.

Young choristers from Cockerton Primary School, in Darlington, came out top in a carol writing competition judged by the town’s mayor, Councillor Gerald Lee.

Ten-year-old Zoe Mann and nine-year-olds Ryan Walton and Sarah Jewitt penned two new verses for Silent Night.

Their efforts won their school choir the chance to perform at next year’s Christmas lights switch-on in Darlington.

Teacher Helen Mason said: “We couldn’t separate the work of the three pupils – they worked collaboratively and produced some wonderful verses.”

The school’s 20-strong choir was also one of five to take part in the annual St Cuthbert’s Carols for Kids event, held recently in aid of St Teresa’s Hospice.

Organiser Naomi Potts said: “All the choirs sang beautifully in what is always a magical occasion.

“All the school choir leaders did a fabulous job supporting the event.”
