STUDENTS at a North-East school have raised more than £2,000 to help support the fight against Ebola.

A fundraising event at Hummerksnott Academy, in Darlington, raised £2,400 for the Médecins Sans Frontières Ebola fund to help fight the disease, which has claimed the lives of more than 5,000 people in West Africa.

After offering prayers for Ebola victims at a recent harvest assembly, students said they felt they could do more to help the situation and organised the charity day.

The event included wet sponging teachers, cake and candy floss stalls, photo booths, hot dogs and meerkat searches.

Senior vice principal, Nick Merifield said: “Once again the students of Hummersknott have risen to the challenge.

“I can’t remember so many different fund raising activities taking place in one day. This is a cause which has touched people greatly.”

A school spokeswoman added: “Special mention should be made of the three female members of staff, who sported Hummersknott uniform in the way it is designed to be worn.”
