THE Scout Association is yet to decide whether to reinstate a scout leader cleared of sexual assault against two young boys.

Christopher Blakeborough, 27, of Darlington, was cleared by a jury at Teesside Crown Court on Friday (October 24) after a week-long trial into allegations that he sexually touched two boys in separate incidents.

Mr Blakeborough, who had been with the Scout Association since he was six years old, was suspended from his position as leader of a group following his arrest in November 2011. A spokesman for the Scout Association explained that the suspension will remain in place pending the outcome of a review.

He said: “The Scout Association is aware of the trial of Mr Blakeborough.

“We have been assisting the statutory authorities throughout their investigation.

“Mr Blakeborough was suspended from any form of contact with the movement as soon as we were aware of his arrest.

“This suspension will remain in place until we have reviewed this matter with the statutory authorities in the coming weeks.

“The Scout Association carries out stringent vetting of all adults who work with young people and requires them to work to a strict code of practice outlined in the Young People First Code of Practice.”

Mr Blakeborough maintained his innocence throughout his trial and said afterwards that he wanted to rebuild his reputation in the community.

He said the three years since his arrest had been “a terrible ordeal” for himself and his family.
