PEOPLE interested in researching the First World War can attend a series of events at Darlington library next month.

The Centre for Local Studies, at the Crown Street library, is holding a number of events on Tuesday, November 4, for those interested in finding out about ancestors who served in the Great War, or those who would like to find out about Darlington and Gainford men who gave their lives.

Wartime newspaper reports will be available to examine and the event will aim to tell some of the stories behind the names on war memorials.

Experiences staff and researchers will be on hand to help people explore the many free resources available.

The event runs from 10.30am to 1pm and is open to anyone interested in finding out more about First World War servicemen.

Stephen Nicholson will be available during the morning to share his research on the Darlington men who died.

The details he researched are now available on The Northern Echo's website, The North East at War.

Mr Nicholson will also be able to suggest how to see other records and War Diaries.

There will also be a display about the Gainford men who are remembered on the village war memorial.

There will be a chance to talk to the researcher, David Pullan who compiled the display, and he will help individuals who want to do their own research.

Rolls of Honour formerly from St Hilda’s Church, Albert Road School and Trowsdale and Stephensons will be on show to the public for the first time in many years

Although they are part of the local studies collection and have been available by appointment they have not been on display together before.

They have been rehung in the Centre for Local Studies, where they will remain for the next four years.

A member of staff from the Durham County Record Office will be at the event to demonstrate the website ‘Durham at War’ and will be looking for material and volunteers to assist them in their countywide mapping project.

In the afternoon on, Mr Nicholson will give a talk, at 2pm, entitled 'Darlington and the Great War: a shattering loss'.

Mr Nicholson has spent several years researching the Darlington men who died in the Great War and will be sharing his findings.

The talk is by ticket only and must be booked in advance, due to limited seating. Tickets cost £2.
