TACKLING shop crime was the big issue at a conference held in the region today (Wednesday, October 15).

The North East Retail Crime Conference in Durham attracted police leaders from across the North-East including Durham chief constable Mike Barton and Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger.

The best shopwatch schemes were honoured with awards.

Organisers emphasised that retail is not a victimless crime and costs £511m last year.

Sarah Dougherty, manager of the North East Retail Crime Partnership, said: “We’re very excited about this year’s event, which promises to demonstrate the good work being done in the region and further afield to reduce crime.

“It’s an honour to have such a high standard of excellent speakers who we can learn from and who provide extra insight into their specialised subjects.

“This year we are privileged to host the first Best of Shopwatch awards which aims to recognise and reward the hard work being done by the members of the local schemes.”
