POLICE and crime agency staff have been praised for their success in re-establishing a police cadet programme in Darlington.

Chief Superintendent Graham Hall of Durham Constabulary presented Chief Constable’s Commendations to six staff who have helped re-introduce the cadet scheme after a 16-year absence.

The new three-year programme helps young people learn more about local policing and how to get involved in improving their community.

The cadets, aged from 14 to 17, have accompanied Darlington officers at several public events and operations, such as bike security marking events, as well as raising money for charity.

The Darlington programme, which launched in April, has already proved such a success that it is being used as a blueprint for neighbouring forces Cleveland and North Yorkshire.

Chief Supt Hall, responsible for policing in the Darlington area, said it was important for the police to ensure that young people’s voices were heard.

He added: “From my point of view I am delighted to be connected with the programme and absolutely delighted with the contribution that the Durham Agency Against Crime and Police and Crime Commissioner (PPC) have made to it.

“I have commended them for their dedication, leadership, professionalism and contribution they have made to the Durham Constabulary police cadet programme.”

Commendation recipient and one of the cadet programme workers, PCSO Simon Callan, said he was “overwhelmed” to receive the award and said the most rewarding thing about the programme was seeing youngsters’ confidence improve.

The cadet scheme is open to anyone aged from 13 to 18-years-old and weekly sessions take place at Polam Hall School, Darlington.

New recruits will be taken on next year, with enrolment dates to be confirmed.
