A TEENAGE girl sold coffee and cakes on the street for the third year running for the Macmillan Nurses at the weekend.

Keen baker Jessica May raised £225 for the cause with her street cafe in Langholm Crescent, in Darlington, on Saturday (September 27).

Her total was a little down on previous years, but the Carmel College student has now raised £925 for the charity which offers nursing support to cancer sufferers.

The 13-year-old explained that she spends days before the event baking and preparing invitation leaflets which she then hand delivers in the area.

About 60 people enjoyed the tea and cake on Saturday.

Jessica, whose grandfather died of cancer before she was born, said: "I saw the Macmillan coffee morning advertised three years ago and just thought, 'that's something I want to do'.

"I love baking and it just seemed a good idea to do it for something as good as the Macmillan Nurses."

Schools and workplaces across Darlington took part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning, on Friday (September 26), to raise funds for Macmillan.

Staff from The Northern Echo's advertising department baked up a storm and sold cakes and other goodies to colleagues, raising £75 in the process.
