A TRANSPORT professional is on target to help raise £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support after reaching new peaks during a 24-hour mountaineering relay.

Carl Coombes who works for Logistics Teesside, in Darlington, recently completed a mammoth team challenge to climb up and down Pen y Fan peak – the highest peak in South Wales.

The team completed the challenge six times each.

As part of a team of 12 retired soldiers and a dedicated support team, the four, three-man teams managed to summit and descend the mountain in a formation that ensured two teams were constantly walking at any given point during the 24 hour period, each team member covering a total distance just shy of a marathon.

Mr Coombes arranged the walk to mark the death of his brother, Ian, a former soldier of The Royal Regiment of Wales, who lost his battle with cancer in November 2012.

He said: “We wanted to do something spectacular in Ian’s memory to raise as much money as possible for Macmillan.

"The fastest time to complete the climb and descent was one hour and 15 minutes, and the slowest three hours and 15 minutes. which shows how the gruelling challenge affected our performance over time.

“We’ll be making the donation on the second anniversary of Ian’s death and have been so humbled by the generosity and support we’ve received for the event. We’re not far off the target and hope to reach it soon."
