EAGLE-EYED residents could catch a last glimpse of the Mynarski Memorial Lancaster tomorrow (Tuesday, September 23) as it heads home to Canada.

The iconic plane – one of only two airworthy Lancasters in the world – is scheduled to leave RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire at 10am and is expected to fly along the North-East coastline on the way to its first homeward stop-off in Iceland.

The plane has been in the UK for two months taking part in various flypasts and airshows with the RAF Coningsby Lancaster.

She visited Durham Tees Valley Airport (DTVA) for a Celebration Day on August 28, but had to stay on for several days for repairs after suffering engine trouble.

Its last public outing was at the Southport Airshow in Merseyside on Sunday and final preparations are now being made in Lincolnshire to ensure the plane is ready for its transatlantic flight.

The Lancaster, which is housed at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Ontario, was named after Canadian Victoria Cross recipient Andrew Mynarski who was based at the RCAF base at Middleton St George, now DTVA.
