A GROUP of nursery children fascinated by building work going on close to their playground have been given the chance to visit the construction site.

Builders working on an extension at Skerne Park School, in Darlington, have struck up a friendship with the three and four-year-olds at the neighbouring nursery school in recent weeks.

The staff from Walter Thompson construction have given up their time to build a den for the nursery and donated hard hats and high visibility jackets for the budding builders and engineers.

As the construction work comes to an end, the children were invited on to the site to see what has changed and allowed to try out one of the diggers.

Emily Tonge, from the nursery, said: “Walter Thompson have been absolutely brilliant – the kids love watching what is going on and they’ve learned so much.

“The builders came in and did measuring with them and lots of little tasks involving numbers. In the playground they’re all wanting to build things so that’s really great. We can’t thank them enough.”
