TWO teenagers have restored pride to English football, not on the pitch but on the table.

Matthew Warr and Callum Oakes, both 17, from Darlington successfully defended their table football junior world championship title in Salzburg, Austria - becoming the first team in the history of the sport to do so.

With the competition stronger than ever, the two teenagers comfortably progressed through the qualifying rounds and knockout stages before facing a determined Lithuanian team in the final.

A tense match saw Matthew and Callum secure a remarkable victory after saving three championship points.

Battling from four sets to two down, the teenagers ensured the title again returned to the North East after winning a final set decider.

With little or no funding available, the youngsters have been reliant on their families’ support to conquer the world’s best.

Matthew’s father and Team GB Junior table football coach, Darren Warr praised the teenagers determination and success, hoping that they would prove an inspiration.

He said: “Their comeback in the final was ridiculous.

“We hope their success attracts more youngsters into the game.”

Both teens learnt their skills at Darlington Table Football Club.

The club attracts players from across the North east and meets at the Hopetown Club once a month.
