FUNDRAISING for a nine-year-old North-East boy with a rare, life-limiting illness was boosted by more than £750 thanks to the efforts of a Boxing Day dip participant.

Cheryl Ellis, from Darlington, took part in the annual sponsored dip at Redcar and raised £762 for Kyran Richmond, from Chilton.

The nine-year-old suffers from Juvenile Batten Disease, a rare neuro-degenerative disorder affecting one in 30,000 births.

There are currently about 250 affected children and young adults in the UK.

Sufferers are born apparently healthy, but go on to develop epilepsy and lose their sight, speech and motor abilities.

There is no cure for the illness, with sufferers usually living into their late teens or early 20s.
