A PENSIONER who has kept and raced pigeons since he was a boy was devastated when his birds were stolen.
Retired miner Raymond Emmerson, of Stanley Crook, is appealing for help to get back birds that were taken from his Old Allotments site in the village.
Thieves broke a window and damaged a bolt on the cree to remove 40 racing pigeons and eight tumblers, on Friday December 11.
Over the following few days, eight of the birds escaped and returned to the site and Mr Emmerson, 82, hopes to recover the rest.
Mr Emmerson said: "I got my first pigeon 70 years ago when I lived in Waterhouses, this is the first time I’ve ever had one stolen and I think it is awful.
"A lot of pigeon people are keeping an eye open at sales and events.
"I had an accident and fell over so someone else has been looking after them, I was just getting myself right when this happened.
"I’d ask anyone with information to help me get them back."
Anyone with information about the stolen pigeons is asked to contact PC Michael Westman at Crook police station, on 0345-60-60-365.
