A CAREERS event for people thinking about their next steps after leaving school is to be held next week.

The Moving Up event, organised by Durham County Council, takes place on Wednesday, October 17 in Belle Vue Leisure Centre, in Ashdale Road, Consett.

Careers advisors will be available to offer guidance on the opportunities available to teenagers in the Derwentside area.

The event, which takes place from 2pm to 3.30pm, is aimed at pupils in Year 10 and Year 11 at school as well as people aged 16 to 18 living in the area.

Staff and pupils from the following schools will be attending: Consett Academy, Harelaw School, North Durham Academy, Roseberry College and Sixth Form, St Bede’s Catholic School and Sixth Form College, Tanfield School and Hermitage Academy.

Linda Bailey, head of improving progression of young people with Durham County Council, said: "This event is an excellent way for school students to find out about the wide range of progression opportunities that are available to them when they complete year 11 and beyond. "It’s a chance for 16 to 18-year-olds who are currently not in education, employment or training to get fixed up with a really good opportunity."
