A TEENAGER is fighting for his life after being attacked in a nightclub while on a night out with friends.
The un-named 18-year-old, from Consett in County Durham, suffered a serious head injury and is critically ill in hospital.
Police investigating the incident, which happened in the early hours of Saturday morning, have appealed for witnesses, or anyone with information, to come forward. A man has been arrested The police and ambulance service were called to the K2 nightspot in Consett's John Street after reports that a reveller had been badly hurt.
The victim was found in the toilets of the club with a serious head injury.
He was rushed to Newcastle General Hospital where his condition was later described as critical.
The club was condoned off to allow Scenes of Crime Officers to start their initial forensic examination of the building and an incident room was set up at Consett Police Station.
Police have said that they do not believe that a weapon was used in the assault.
At about 9am on Saturday officers went to an address in Consett and arrested a man aged 23 on suspicion of assault. He is currently helping detectives with their enquiries.
Detective Inspector Tracey McNally said: "We understand the victim had been out with friends in Consett from around midnight before they ended up in K2.
"At this stage there is nothing to suggest he was involved in any confrontation in the club before the incident.
"As part of our enquiries we will be studying CCTV footage from inside the club for potential evidence and we need anyone who was in the premises that night who has information to contact us.''
