Knit to help disaster victims

CHILDREN from a north Durham school are knitting to help people involved in disasters abroad.

Year five pupils, aged nine and ten, from The Grove Primary School, near Consett, are knitting six inch squares that will be eventually stitched together to form patchwork quilts.

Headteacher Liz Hume said: "It has really taken off and the kids are knitting all the time, in the corridors and in the playground. They love it."

Children involved will decide where the quilts are to be sent before the summer holidays.

The school is appealing for help from knitters to help them achieve their goal of two blankets.

Mrs Hume said: "We would like to ask people to knit six inch squares using size six and seven needles with double wool and 36 inches on a needle." To help call 01207-502938.
