RESIDENTS will come together this weekend to clean up their communities.
Members of the community in Blackhill, Benfieldside, Bridgehill and Shotley Bridge will take to the streets on Saturday to collect litter and generally tidy up the area.
The clean-up has been organised by the Benfieldside, Blackhill, Bridgehill and Shotley Bridge Community Partnership, who say they are tired of the tide of litter bringing down the area’s reputation and are sick of paying to get other people's rubbish cleaned up.
Residents of the area are asked to join in the clean-up campaign, which starts at 9.30am on Saturday from the Bridgehill Communal Room on Pemberton Road.
Co-organiser Jeff Singleton said: "This clean up will show others that we care about the future of our local environment and that we are not prepared to live, work and play in an area that is blighted by rubbish.
"What is good about working together like this, is it creates a sense of community and for some of our younger volunteers it is their first taste of active citizenship."
