Hamsterley cyclist has lucky escape after mountain bike track sabotaged

A CYCLIST was fortunate to escape serious injury when he was “clotheslined” by a piece of rope tied between two trees on a North-East mountain bike track.

It is thought the trap, which was a few feet off the ground at the Descend Hamsterley track, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, was laid sometime between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday or between 7am and 10am on Sunday.

The unknown man rode into the rope at about noon on Sunday.

Video footage caught on his helmet camera shows him being thrown from his bike and, after spending a few seconds on the floor, getting up and untying the rope.

See tomorrow's The Northern Echo for the full story.

There are times and places for using language like this. I think this is one of those times this can be deemed ok.

Do you really think its professional to upload a video with the cyclist shouting fúckíng heii; or the message at 23seconds across the bottom of the screen saying Dear fúckíng idiot(s) one day your gonna pay for that?
I thought this was a family paper and family site - you either aren't or your 'journalists' are just lazy
The video should have carried a warning. It looks as though the wrong one has been uploaded and we are correcting it now.

If you have a problem then read the paper where you can't watch videos, how many children will be on a website reading the news. My guess would be none.

Well strangely "darlopaul" I had much the same reaction when I was knocked off my bike by a dopey cow this morning as I cycled to work wearing my Harry Potteresque large cloak of high visibility. I suppose near death experiences just bring out the worst in people.
TW&T !

I too would have given the same reaction if it was me and have no criticism for the rider! I would just have expected the Northern Echo to have bleeped it out before uploading it to a website?
Seems reasonable...

Posssibly so in some Utopian world that I'm not aware of. I live in leafy Romanby and see kids spitting, throwing rubbish on the ground and, just occasionally, using the odd swear word. Perhaps I should move to "Darlo" where all is sweetness and light. I have no wish to fall out with you but don't you think a dose of reality is healthy now and again ?
Goodnight, all the best.

this really was an idiotic thing to do and do not condone it in anyway.
i am a regualr walker in the forest and have nearly been knocked down a few times by cyclists. maybe this is the reason that some idiot did it? or maybe because they are trying to stop the erosion that the bikes cause? its time we had seperate areas for bikes and walkers maybe.

I think you will find that this was on the 'bikes bit' and not a path that walkers use!
I am also a regular walker and dog walker in the forest and I can say I have never had any issues with bikes!

I think you will find that most of the money for the forest comes from these bikers before going on like that!!

You know what if half these kids didn't have a hobbie and were terrorising your estates and homes you would moan, give them a hobbie and they go play on "bike" trails and still you moan........ After all most of the trails up there were built for bikes hence clear signs!!

Let's not get on to corrosion either as horse and the 4x4 rally etc make a **** sight more damage...

As already mentioned there is separate tracks for walkers maybe you were on the wrong one? I have rode my bike up there since I was 11 that's 19 years now and will continue to do so for years to come.

Imagine if the rope culprit had been caught in the act as a rider came down flat out fully armoured.... Would he stop or take them out?! I suppose the biker would still get the blame eh.....

wtf?
you say im going on? moaning?
your an idiot if you think so.
i was just trying to find an acceptable way for all to use the forest, but you had to jump onto your high bike. i have been nearly hit by bikes who shoot across paths without giving way when they should and biking down paths made for walkers. im not saying all bikers do cause problems and most are even very polite. but i am saying some cause problems and give the rest of you lot a bad name. if a biker runs over on purpose, a **** putting a rope up then yes it would be his fault, knob. any court of law will prove that.
