Bare-faced cheek can’t spoil a great show

A NAKED man sent shockwaves through the crowd at a major North-East agricultural event on Saturday.

Families and farmers enjoying the sun at Wolsingham Show, in Weardale, County Durham, could not believe their eyes at about 3.30pm when the drunk reveller made his way into the main arena.

Police were quickly on the scene and arrested the 30-yearold man from Durham City.

He was later questioned on suspicion of indecent exposure and being drunk and disorderly.

Organisers said that, other than this incident, the annual show was a success, with a record number of visitors and entrants travelling to the village to take part throughout the weekend.

Show jumpers battled it out for rosettes, while dog owners led their pets through a dog agility course.

Prizes were handed out for livestock, flowers and vegetables and people browsed a selection of craft stalls.

A small number of entries to the flower show were tampered with overnight on Saturday when organisers say a vandal broke into the marquee.

The competition went ahead as normal on Sunday, however, with trophies distributed for arrangements of geraniums, chrysanthemums and gladiolas.

Cockerton Band entertained on Saturday and a traditional Punch and Judy show kept youngsters amused.

The Northern Echo’s Scott Wilson was also on hand to commentate during a vintage tractor display on Sunday.

Show secretary Gordon Dobson said he was delighted the show still attracts so many with a line dancing marquee and dog classes proving popular.

He also denied claims there were complaints about the entrance fee being raised to £8 and said a parking charge had been abolished.

“It has been a superb weekend, all entries have been up” he said. “The proceeds have been good this year, putting us back on a level footing after having made substantial losses in 2008 during the floods.”
