A MUSEUM has been highlighted as one of the country’s best free visitor attractions by making the shortlist for a national award.

Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon was shortlisted in the new Rough Guide to Accessible Britain Awards for best free venue in the UK.

The scheme, in its first year, rewards the efforts made by attractions to ensure that visitors with disabilities enjoy an inclusive, inspiring and accessible experience.

Museum manager, George Muirhead, said: "We have worked hard to be as accessible as possible and are really excited that these efforts have been recognised.

"Welcoming visitors with disabilities to Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon is part of our day to day operations and we enjoy the feedback we receive to continue to make the experience as inclusive and enjoyable as possible.

"To be shortlisted for a Rough Guide to Accessible Britain Award is a fantastic acknowledgement of the standards we strive to achieve."

The Awards, supported by Motability Operations and launched to coincide with the third edition of the award winning Rough Guide to Accessible Britain, recognise the best accessible, inclusive and inspirational visitor attractions across the UK.

The Alnwick Garden, in Northumberland, has been short listed in the best family venue category. Winners will be announced on Monday at an event in London hosted by outdoors adventurer and TV personality Ben Fogle.

The Accessible Britain Awards and The Rough Guide to Accessible Britain guidebook, in which winners will feature, are supported by Motability.

The guidebook is due for publication next month and is free to blue badge holders.
