Housing estate's arts festival opens this weekend

A HOUSING estate’s annual arts festival takes place in Bishop Auckland next week.

The event, on the Woodhouse Close Estate, which is now in its’ fifth year, will be officially opened by Bishop Auckland’s MP, Helen Goodman, at Woodhouse Close Church, on Saturday at 11am.

The week-long festival, funded by Durham County Council’s Safer, Stronger Communities Fund, includes an open exhibition of work from local community groups and schools at the church’s community centre, on Proudfoot Drive.

Dozens of free arts-based activities are being offered throughout the week for all age groups, including knitting, felt jewellery-making, painting, and fabric craft.

An open variety performance, showcasing local talent, takes place in the church’s community centre, on Friday, February 19, at 7pm, and the festival culminates with a celebratory service at the church on Sunday, February 21, at 10am.

Jane Crawford, director of the festival, said: "This is one week in the year where the community can come together as a whole and try new activities."

Leaflets containing the full programme of events are available at Woodhouse Close Library, and at the community centre.
