Sports taster sessions for youngsters in Bishop Auckland

YOUNG people in Bishop Auckland are being invited to sports taster sessions.

Groundwork North-East has organised the activities, entitled Do Something Different Today, as part of a Pride project, encouraging communities to take pride in the area where they live.

The first activity takes place at Auckland Youth and Community Centre, Walker Drive, on the Woodhouse Close Estate, on Wednesday, offering youngsters the opportunity to try indoor hockey.

The free session, hosted by staff from Bishop Barrington School, runs from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.

Staff from the school will also run a basketball session next month (March) at Woodhouse Close’s new multi-use games area.

Other activities taking place over the next few weeks include street dance at the youth centre, trampolining at King James 1 Community Centre, and boxing at Woodhouse Close Primary School.

The initiative has been funded by Durham County Council’s Stronger, Safer Communities Fund, and Durham Constabulary’s Basic Command Unit Fund.

Joanne Morley, project officer at Groundwork, said: "The activities have been suggested by children and young people living on the Woodhouse Close estate. We hope that trying something different will give them a positive outlook, and encourage them to pursue other activities being offered in the area."
