A FORMER Bedale mayor who lives with Alzheimer’s disease has backed plans to restore to the town day care services for fellow sufferers.

Paddy Shepherdson, who served as mayor during the Nineties, was diagnosed four years ago and controls her condition with drugs.

Day care for Alzheimer’s patients was hosted at the Dalescare centre, in the town, but were controversially withdrawn last year.

A voluntary group was subesquently set up, with a view to supplying improved facilities for the benefit of all age groups.

Mrs Shepherdson, 78, said: “I am lucky, because I can still do a lot, even though I have Alzheimer’s.

“But it is something that does not get any better.

“The fact that day care was withdrawn upset a lot of people in Bedale. I can still stand up and shout my corner, but not everybody can.

“If the group is able to bring day care back, I would make a point of using it, in order to show my support.”

Questionnaires have been distributed by members of the 20-strong group, with the aim of canvassing local opinions and garnering more support.

Carol Clark, a member of Bedale town council, who chairs the community group, said: “Our goal is to set up a community hub, where services and support can be accessed by all the community.

“It will also present an opportunity for those with skills, and time on their hands, to offer support to the community.

“We are an inclusive group and welcome all ideas, comments and questions.

“This provision will offer services to meet individual needs and provide an opportunity to socialise in safe and friendly surroundings.

“It is going to happen, so why not get involved and help to shape it.”

The consultation has been extended until the middle of next month.

Questionnaires, which can be filled in anonymously, are available from a range of locations in Bedale and the surrounding villages.

They include: Bedale tourist information centre, Masham community office, The Hive at RAF Leeming, Burneston CE School, the Buck Inn at Thornton Watlass, Carricks in Snape, The Willow Treee in Leeming Village and churches in Crakehall, Patrick Brompton and Hornby.
