YORKSHIRE is to go head to head with holiday hotspots including the Maldives, Australia and New York in an international tourism competition.

Welcome to Yorkshire, the tourism agency for the county, has been nominated in the world’s leading tourist board category at the World Travel Awards.

The agency has also been shortlisted for the world's leading tourism authority website at the awards.

Online voting has now opened for the awards and it is hoped that Yorkshire fans around the world will get behind the county.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: "This is awesome news for the county of Yorkshire. Our job is to fly the Yorkshire flag internationally which we are incredibly proud to do and with such an amazing destination to promote we feel privileged to have been nominated for these awards."

Nominees were chosen from votes by travel, tourism and hospitality business across the globe.

Welcome to Yorkshire was victorious at last year’s awards after winning the title of the world’s leading marketing campaign for its ‘A long weekend in Yorkshire isn’t long enough’ campaign.

The winners will be announced in November.
